What Is Aquatoto Gifu?

Nestled along the banks of the Kiso River in Kakamigahara City, Aquatoto Gifu holds a unique distinction: it is Japan's only freshwater aquarium built beside a natural river. Rather than focusing on ocean creatures, this remarkable facility showcases the rich biodiversity of rivers and lakes from across Japan and around the world.

The aquarium opened in 2004 and has since become one of Gifu Prefecture's most popular family-friendly attractions, drawing visitors of all ages with its thoughtful exhibits and picturesque riverside setting.

What to See Inside

Japanese River Zones

The heart of Aquatoto Gifu is its celebration of Japan's freshwater ecosystems. Large tanks recreate the environments of rivers like the Kiso and Nagara, letting you observe native species in naturalistic habitats. Look out for:

  • Giant salamanders (ōsanshōuo) — one of Japan's most iconic and endangered species
  • Ayu (sweetfish) — a fish deeply tied to Gifu's cultural identity
  • Itou (Siberian taimen) — Japan's largest freshwater fish
  • Various native carp, catfish, and lamprey species

World Rivers Gallery

Beyond Japan, the aquarium takes visitors on a global freshwater journey. Exhibits feature species from the Amazon, Congo, Mekong, and Murray-Darling river systems, including piranhas, arapaima, lungfish, and freshwater stingrays.

Otter and Capybara Encounters

One of the most beloved corners of the aquarium is the small mammal area, where playful Asian small-clawed otters entertain visitors with their antics. During certain seasons, capybara outdoor bathing events draw enthusiastic crowds.
